Spring, Texas - Just Click Spring - Estelle Getty Dies at 84

Actress Estelle Getty passed away Tuesday (July 22) morning at the age of 84. Getty died in her home in Hollywood from natural causes. She suffered from advanced dementia.

Getty is best known for her role as Sophia on the Golden Girls, in which she appeared in 173 episodes from 1985-1992. She won 7 emmy awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, 2 Golden Globe awards for Actress in a Leading Role and 1 Golden Globe Award for Actress in a Supporting Role--all for her role in the Golden Girls.

Unfortunately for her role in Stop! or My Mom Will Shoot in 1992 she won a Worst Supporting Acrtress award from the Golden Raspberry Award.

Some of the movies in which she appeared are: Tootsie (1982), Mask (1985), Mannequin (1987), Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot (1992), and Stuart Little (1999). She has also made a few televesion appearances: Copacabana (1985) , Empty Nest (2 episodes, 1988-1995), and The Golden Palace (24 episodes, 1992-1993).

Getty was born on July 25, 1923. She married her husband Arthur Gettleman in 1946 and remained married to him until his death in 2004.

Getty is survived by two sons - Carl and Barry Gettleman; and two siblings - David Scher and Rosilyn Howard.
